A Good Aaaarrggghhhh!!

By Rev. Edie Weinstein http://liveinjoy.org

Sometimes, when it is all, finally, too much, I climb into my car, roll the windows up, and somewhere between backing out the driveway and rounding the next corner, I let out a yell that would topple Manhattan. How do you pray?
by Margaret L. Mitchell, as quoted in The Feminine Face of God, p. 124.

Edietree2My friend Cindy Greb posted this on her Facebook page and I knew I had to respond since it spoke so vividly to the ways I blow off steam AND pray. My response to her was:” Sometimes a good aaaarrrggghhhh is as potent and healing as a good o0o0o00o0o0mmmmm (: I pray every which way imaginable, depending on what state of mind I am in the moment.”

When I was in seminary in 1999, studying to be an interfaith minister, (The New Seminary in New York City), I wrote a paper called Prayer is Portable. There I expressed my take on the subject that we need not be in an edifice such as a church, synagogue, temple, mosque or ashram in order to engage in communication with the Divine. Many of us were taught that prayer must be in a certain form, a particular language and uttered at certain times. I was raised in Judaism (Conservative…spiritually, not politically, which is considered a middle ground between Orthodox and Reform) and went to Hebrew school until age 16. Each night throughout my childhood, my parents would tuck us in with the recitation of the Shema, which is what I call ‘the signature prayer’ of the Jewish religion. “Shema Yisrael Adonai Elohenu Adonai Echad” which translates to “Hear, O Israel, The Lord Our God, The Lord is One”. I heard my favorite interpretation from Rabbi Rami Shapiro: “That which we call God is Oneness itself.” What if we recognized the Oneness in all events and every being? To this day, I say the prayer before drifting off into dreamland. Each morning before rolling out of bed, I allow the words to The Modeh Ani to flow through me.

Modeh ani lifanekha melekh ḥai v’kayam sheheḥezarta bi nishmahti b’ḥemlah, rabah emunatekha.“

This translates to “I offer thanks before you, living and eternal King, for You have mercifully restored my soul within me; Your faithfulness is great.”

I then engage in another ritual which is to set intention for the day: “to have extraordinary experiences and connect with amazing people.” As the next 24 hours unfold, those events occur and those folks show up. Why should it surprise me? Throughout the day, my prayers are about wrapped in gratitude for what unfolds and what I desire to call in. As a wordsmith, I am careful to use language that speaks to what I do want, rather than what I don’t want…since our minds are tricky little critters that can lead us down all manner of meandering paths that we would prefer to avoid. I have found myself laughing with amazement and amusement at how far I have come in the past twenty or so years, from the somewhat timid little creature who dared not believe that she could truly live the life of her dreams. I attribute that to the process I described above. When the need to emote otherwise, arises, I allow myself to engage in toning, chanting, drumming, dancing, jumping up and down energy release.

As I enter this new morning, I express appreciation for the blessings that are constantly unfolding and let out an ahhhhh…rather than an arrggghhhh at this moment.

The Fertile Void

By Lorraine Cohen, www.lorrainecohen.com

“If an egg is broken by outside force, life ends. If broken by inside force, life begins. Great things always begin from inside.” – Jim Kwik

path-light2On a recent call with a good friend, she mentioned being in a “fertile void”. We’ve both been doing deep inner healing and introspection, taking periods to slow down and rest, and letting go of people and things in every area of our lives that no longer serves us.

The “Fertile Void” is a place of preparation for something new to be birthed while living in the abyss.

Here’s an excerpt to a TED talk transcript with Suzanne Braun Levine:

“The term is a Taoist concept that describes a step in the process of change, when everything seems lost and nothing yet found. That is where we find ourselves as we make the transition from adulthood – a well-documented and well-scripted stage of life – to Second Adulthood – a totally new life experience being defined by living longer and healthier lives and by arriving there as more confident and experienced women (men get there too, but not along quite the same route).

Like adolescence, that other very tumultuous transition that it resembles, Second Adulthood is about reinvention. Margaret Mead once said that adolescence is no less than “the birth of the soul.” The Fertile Void is, I believe, where the soul is reborn.

You enter feeling broken, and you emerge feeling broken open. The process is a mission without a goal. We get impatient. We feel frantic and stuck. The unremitting unknowingness is maddening. But desperate as we are, we have to give ourselves some slack. We have to go with the flow. The solution to being stuck is being still.”

I resonate with so much of what Suzanne say about my own spiritual journey of feeling broken open to be revealed to my Truest Self. This is the journey of enlightenment and living from Higher Guidance.

After big growth spurts and extensive creative periods I often found my life slowed down and I felt disconnected from my guidance, like being “out in the desert.” I realized those were gifts of time for deep rest, contemplation, and play; to come back into harmony with myself and what’s next.

The Fertile Void has some similarities to my desert experiences and what is different is that I feel very connected to my spirit. I sense I am in an incubation period for something big to break out, which might be ME. Each time I ask for a glimpse, my guidance seems to say with a wink and a twinkle, “You’ll see!”

This is a time of letting go of everything and everyone that is no longer serving you to allow your spirit to light the way. It is also a time to stand in courage, faith, and trust in a higher plan for your life unfolding.

Imagine cleaning all the furniture out of your house to create a fresh, new space. In this period of preparation, you must let go of the need to be busy doing something and you must let go of the need to know how, what, when and why.

Do you feel like you are living in the Fertile Void?

Breathe..

The answers come when they are meant to.

You may find that whatever you are trying to do is not working despite your efforts and intentions.

Sometimes you must have a break down before you have a break through…..

The Fertile Void is a space of emergence and a rite of passage to live from a higher expression of your truest self and destiny. When you stop pushing and slow down you can ask those deeper questions like, “what do I really, really want?” and connect with the core of your heart.

Each period of expansion brings deeper answers.

I think of a Sherlock Homes line, “The game is afoot,” in anticipation of an adventure to unravel a mystery.

The Fertile Void is not static. It is a place of transformation and creation; a blessing and a pathway to live from POWER, passion, and purpose. Make the whispers of your soul the guiding force in your life and use your mind for the practical functions of your life.

Allow your spirit to carry you and you will feel the hand of Grace no matter what is happening in your life.

You are being taught to live in new ways; for your life to become fun, easy, joyful, abundant….

Embrace the mystery. The best is yet to come!

Blessings,

Lorraine

Why Trying To Get “Rid Of Fear” Is A Mind Game You Can’t Win

By Lorraine Cohen, www.lorrainecohen.com

“You are allowed to be scared. Fear doesn’t come up because you did something wrong, you’re doomed, or you look funny. Fear comes up because you’re not seeing some gorgeous, valuable and much-needed jewel right where you’re standing, and it will absolutely not let you go out that door without it.” – Mark Silver

reflection-shadow1I’ve been dancing with fear all my life. For example, when I was in my 30’s I overcame fear of public speaking to become a sought after speaker and I moved to a new state with little money and no steady income to build a coaching/spiritual guidance/therapy practice that is approaching its 28th year. Was it scary? Hell yeah.

How did I deal with my fears and doubts? At the time I used what most people were working with: affirmations, creative visualization, focusing on being in the present, breathing, hypnosis, emotionally eating … techniques geared to interrupt the mental messages, body sensations, and change beliefs and “get rid” of the fear feelings.

The focus was all about stopping and getting rid of unwanted fears and feelings.

In the late 1990’s my life fell apart for the second time. After buying a new home, a new car, doing some home renovations, my therapy practice suddenly began to steadily decline. Money fears created a panic and I found the usual mind control techniques failed to provide any long term relief. I had periods of feeling terrified, helpless, angry, desperate, and sad. At other times I saw something miraculous happening that would change my life if I just stayed strong and trusting to walk the distance through the darkness into the Light.

I began to understand the missing pieces. I realized that facing fear is not about overcoming it, it is about walking through it. I began looking at fear in a new light…

Instead, imagine seeing fear as an ally to:

* Keep you out of harm’s way by alerting you to danger.

* Help you to discern when you need to set healthy boundaries to be safe and protected.

* Support you in developing courage to show up to LIFE.

* Build faith in yourself, others, and God.

* Provide motivational and inspirational energy to break through perceived limitations and illusions to stand in your greatness.

* Show you when the “little you” inside needs attention and comfort; to feel love, care, and protection.

* Empower you to find your voice in your relationships, your business and in the message you wish to share with the world.

* And most importantly, show you when you have disconnected from the Divine within you, the True Source of your Power.

Trying to get “rid of fear” is a mind game you can’t win.

As long as you see your fears as an enemy to defeat, you will continue to wage war against yourself.

To transform fear you must walk through it… to see the illusions and reclaim your Power.

The darkness or challenge is a pathway to the Light. You can get stuck in the story of a perceived problem. When you look for the deeper meaning of each experience that challenges you, you will always find healing, learning and growth opportunities.

Debbie Ford once wrote:

“Thank your soul for bringing fear into your life as a pathway to find your way back home to God – this presence within you that loves you dearly– this energy that always triumphs fear. Love your fears as you would anything you cherish – bless them, honor them, and use them as the sacred reminders that they are … lighting the way back to the wholeness of your Sacred Self and into the loving embrace of the Divine.”

Beautiful wisdom…

You are living at an auspicious time in history, waking up to see life through a new set of eyes in this Era of Enlightenment. Fear will continue to be a part of your life experience as you grow and evolve. A critical key to dance in this new energy is to learn how to live in the present moment, embracing each experience without resistance and allowing your feelings to be fully felt without trying to control, manage, move, and direct their elimination.

Any attempt you do to try to control your experience will create more resistance and suffering.

Feel your fears (and every emotion) without focusing on the mental story your mind/ego is creating.

Experience your emotions as the energy they are and breathe into them, doing NOTHING. Just feel, breathe and notice… body sensations, thoughts swirling…whatever…..let your emotions play out….

Without resistance and actively engaging your efforts to get rid of or stop what you don’t want to feel, the emotions will begin to burn out and fall apart leading to transformation. Peace and Grace will rush in when you stop fighting.

Embrace your fears with love instead of judging them and doing battle. Your life will change…. 😀

Keys To Living Your Biggest and Brightest Life

By collaborator Lorraine Cohen www.lorrainecohen.com/blog/

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.” ~ from A Return to Love, by Marianne Williamson.

woman-purple-oasisWe use the word power in many different contexts. Words have different meanings for each of us; different concepts, points of reference and interpretations.

The notion of Power might hold a negative connotation for you. For another, having power and feeling powerfull might be a positive state of being.

When you hear or think of the word ‘power’, what words or phrases come to your mind?

Do you have a negative reaction that turns you right off?

Do you have a positive response that feels uplifting and empowering?

A negative response to the word power might be:

~ Manipulation
~ Abusive
~Oppression
~ Money hungry
~ Controlling
~ Helplessness
~ Pain
~ Unkindness
~Fear

A positive response to the word power might feel uplifting and empowering:

Feeling Unstoppable
Being Source
Magical
~ Becoming a deliberate Creator
~ Fearless
~ Freedom
~ Limitless possibilities
~ Confident
~ Having unwavering strength
~ Being in alignment with spirit
~ Living a value-base life
~ Sense of holiness

Perhaps you have a mixed reaction to the word Power and what it means to you?

When I talk about power what I am speaking about is your personal power because when you stand in your truth both as a human and spiritual being, how you show up is personal for you.

True power comes from being authentic and true to who you are, rather than solely focusing on your accomplishments and status. It means remembering that the Source of everything you seek that has created worlds lives within you, through you and as you. In this context personal power/authentic power is holy and Divine, individually and collectively.

Breathe into that. Feel that in your heart and in your body

Authentic Power is the relationship between your personality and your soul to create a life of meaning and purpose. Struggle happens when parts of your personality are in opposition to your soul’s intentions.

To create an authentically powerfull life you need to align your personality with your soul to have:

* A life with more joy and less pain and struggle.
* A life with more peace and love and less fear and drama.
* A life that allows your heart to blossom; to give and receive love freely and do things that make you feel vital and alive.

You stop trying to make things happen and start allowing life to bless you. What you are doing is fulfilling, nurturing and life seems to flow with ease and Grace even during challenging times.

What you believe, think, feel and say about power is critical to living your purpose and divine destiny. To deny and shy away from owning and embracing who you truly are as a powerfull co-creator is to separate yourself from the real you and God/Higher Presence.

This place of separation is caused by thought patterns, thought concepts, cultural conditioning, family/mental rules, and past experiences of unresolved pain and traumas.

In this incredible time of awakening we are being called to uncover where we are misaligned with our truest selves; to heal our hearts, and reclaim the life we came here to live.

You might be feeling stuck, scared, confused, overwhelmed, frustrated as well as excited and optimistic…. You might be feeling a deep inner yearning for something that something that wants to be expressed or released….

This is a time of breakthroughs, miracles and magic. The most important relationship in creating an authentically powerfull life is the one you have with God as the veils of separation are thinning.

The bond you have with the Divine is an essential key to create heaven on earth and live your biggest, boldest dreams. The time is NOW to make those dreams happen.

The Divine is reaching for a deeper connection with you. Do you sense that?

This year holds a very different energy – one that is full of promise and joyful manifestation. This is a year of Magic and Fulfillment; to give yourself permission to have what you really, really want and not what you think you need to settle for.

Can you feel that too?

This is your time. Go, make some magic! 😀

Love and blessings,

A Spiritual Truth About Faith and Peace

By Lorraine Cohen www.lorrainecohen.com

Inner peace doesn’t come from getting what you want. Inner peace comes from remembering who you are at the deepest level… Divine ~ Lorraine Cohen

FaithIf you look at life through black and white eyes you miss all the rainbows in the grey. If you continue to label life experiences as good and bad, right and wrong, you will only be living a slice of life.

If you expect things to go poorly rather than well, you will likely create that. If you focus only on the negative when things don’t go your way, you will sacrifice your inner peace and happiness. If you allow the behavior of others to control your life then you empower others to control your joy. And if you feel ingratitude for what blesses your life every day, what makes you think you will be happier with more?

Your attitude, beliefs, expectations, and perceptions shape your experiences. Your life can change in an instant. You have it within you to transform the landscape of your life by the choices you make with an open mind and heart. Life is meant to be a grand adventure full of mystery, twists and turns, laughter, surprises and opportunities to stretch yourself to new horizons.

Remember energy goes where attention goes. The Universe is watching and listening….You are either living by conscious intention or unconscious default.

You don’t have to have it all figured out to move forward.

No matter what is happening “out there”, peace begins within. Trust that there is a reason and purpose for the experiences you have and the more you embrace them with an open mind and heart to receive the gifts that may not as yet be revealed, the more you will dance with life in Grace.

Stop for a moment, tune into your heart and connect with your soul. Focus on taking several slow deep breaths. Bring each breath up from your belly and fill your lungs to capacity with the energies of Divine Love. As you exhale slowly, send the energies out into the world to anyone and anything that you love.

Consider the special people in your life, Mother Earth, animals, the government, places of suffering … or wherever it is most needed.

As you breathe Divine Love in and out, invite the energies to fill you up completely, immersing yourself in this vibration and rest there a while longer, soaking it in.

Ahhhhhh. Then be open to receive the Love and blessings coming back to you. As we give we automatically receive.

Approach life as a grand adventure with the spirit of a child and the courage of a warrior.

Just take that next step in faith and trust and see what happens…

When you begin to experience doubt and worry, let it be a reminder to increase your faith. Remember that everything happens for a reason. Let go of trying to understand why and rest in the knowing that, in the end, all will be well. Because it will … Really.

Life can be magical if you let it.

You are more loved than you may realize and you never walk alone.

Sending Love and gratitude your way 😀

How To Find the “Blessings” In Every Moment

By Lorraine Cohen www.lorrainecohen.com

blessings-flow-to-you1Gratitude, like faith, is a muscle. The more you use it, the stronger it grows, and the more power you have to use it on your behalf. If you do not practice gratefulness, its benefaction will go unnoticed, and your capacity to draw on its gifts will be diminished. To be grateful is to find blessings in everything, This is the most powerful attitude to adopt, for there are blessings in everything.” ~ Alan Cohen

This morning as I awoke to the rain falling, I thought, “I wonder what blessings will be coming my way today?” I was inspired to begin my day with this curiosity from a conversation I had with a friend last night.

How you start your day sets the tone and the energy that moves through your day. If you begin from a centered space, you can flow with life with more ease and Grace.

I’ve been playing with the intention of seeing the blessings in everything for many years. Sometimes it has been challenging and yet, when I look deeper, I always find several gold nuggets to enrich my life.

One of my greatest teachers is my sweet 15-year old cat Cassie who is dealing with kidney disease. Despite ongoing bouts of diarrhea and some vomiting she continues to be engaged and playful. What she teaches me is to not see her as ill, rather to see her as “being” who she is and loving her “there.” And when the sadness comes, it is a blessing to feel and release the pain of losing her when it is time to let her go.

She continues to bless me in learning patience, trusting my intuition in taking care of her and myself, fully show up and appreciate the special loving moments we share. She is teaching me to surrender and let go and how to stand strong when my heart breaks.

Blessings come in many forms, shapes and sizes.

Recognizing blessings can be tricky because the mind is so quick to label experiences as positive or negative.

It’s easy to feel gratitude when things go the way you like and want. It’s a common response to resist and react negatively when things seem to go awry or present unwanted challenges.

* The people who push you buttons help you learn so much about yourself
* A difficult relationship can help you find your voice, your value, and your power.
* Losing a job may lead you to your life’s passion and purpose.
* A health challenge may help you cultivate self-love and forgiveness.
* A delay in moving forward may be a Divine redirection to something even better.
* Obstacles may help you discover what you really, really, want.

What if you saw every challenge, every perceived problem, every annoyance, every person and situation as an opportunity to heal, grow, and spiritually evolve AND make a difference in the world.

What if EVERYTHING in your life was brilliantly created (by YOU) to help you dissolve barriers, heal inner wounds, replace illusions with deeper truth, and bring you closer to your higher Divine Self?

What if every experience was designed to bring you “home” to Love and peace so that you could also help to heal the world?

How would your world change?

What would you be thinking, feeling, seeing, saying and doing differently?

Asking the right questions can reveal hidden gifts especially when you stop, tune into your heart and body and connect with your inner guidance..

When facing challenges and repetitive themes, awareness brings illumination.

1. What message does the experience bring? What is your spirit trying to tell you?

2. What have you been resisting that you know in your heart is true? A feeling, an action?

3. What story are you standing in? What is your truth/the truth?

4. What are you being called to claim and OWN?

5. What is yours to heal?

Begin each day with a grateful heart. Look for the blessings in your daily life in the shadows and in plain view.

Notice the beauty, the simple pleasures, the things that delight you, the things that stretch you out of your comfort zone to follow your heart, the ways in which you are being called to show up and stand in your power… and be open to see how Divinely supported and loved you really are.

Love and blessings,

Lorraine

Are You Willing?

By Lorraine Cohen, www.lorrainecohen.com

soul-adorationAre you willing?

I was asked the question on a coaching call many years ago. I was struggling with stepping up and out in a bigger way.

My fears and “not good enough” messages were swirling in my head. I knew I was sharing my gifts and talents in comfortable ways and the idea of being more visible felt daunting.

We were speaking about my doing interviews, leading online teleseminars and in –person workshops, creating products and programs….yikes.

What did I have to offer that anyone really wanted and would pay for?

And what if I failed?

I came up with excuses and reasons to resist expanding my work into new areas and yet, there was a part of me that felt excited at the opportunities.

So when she asked, “Lorraine, are you willing?” I knew she was also asking if I was open to new possibilities and opportunities to fulfill my deepest desires and dreams. The first step in saying YES to something new is to be willing AND open to experience life in a bigger way.

I explored:

Am I willing to fail?

Am I willing to succeed?

Am I willing to learn something new that might become something fabulous?

Am I willing to be uncomfortable in uncertainty?

Am I willing to let go of the need to know and take a leap of faith?

Am I willing to let my heart and soul guide me for the pure joy of the experience?

Am I willing to let go of what I think I have to do to allow what is ready to unfold?

Am I willing to have fun with creating what I want?

Am I willing to be open to possibilities?

So I said Yes!

I was willing then and still ask myself that question whenever I am stretching out of my comfort zone.

When I began working on surrender I realized that I didn’t know how to really let go without feeling resistance or trying to control, manage, or direct what I was feeling, thinking, and experiencing. I could talk about surrender conceptually but embodying the essence of letting go completely and embracing life in each moment felt elusive.

So, I started with a willingness to learn how and put out my prayer request to be shown how to let go with as much Grace and ease that I would allow. I am still learning how to let God and let go every day!

You don’t have to have everything figured out!

Just start with a willingness!

Is there something you have been struggling with? Perhaps it is something you have been resisting? Perhaps there is something you have been TRYING to change or create without a lot of success? Maybe you have convinced yourself that something you deeply want is out of your reach because you feel inadequate or not enough?

Asking yourself the question, “Am I willing?” is an invitation to freely play and explore the field of possibilities without the burden of shoulds and have tos or feeling pressured to make something happen by your own efforts.

Being willing and open, like you were as a child, invites magic and miracles; to flow with life and see each day as a grand adventure.

Here are five ways to deliberately play in the field of willingness:

1. Experiment. Be curious to play with and take some actions with an idea for the fun of it. Make “what if” a game that allows you stand in wonder and possibility! Meander with a sense of purpose by letting go of the need to see and understand where the path will lead. It begins with just one step that always leads to the next. You can use experiences to find out so much about yourself including what you really, really want.

2. Redirect your energy and imagination. Turn anger, fear, anxiety, and feelings of unworthiness into your passion for what you want to be, have or do. Becoming aware in the midst of an emotional and physical reaction can empower you to embrace the charge and then shift the energy towards what you most want to create. Flip the switch!

3. Question the messages you are telling yourself. You might be using past experiences as an excuse and reason to hold yourself back. What if what you are thinking, believing and telling yourself is a big fat lie? “What happened then is sure to repeat”. Take the gifts and learning from prior experiences to plant seeds for a blessed present and limitless tomorrow. Remember that when you align with the Divine, anything is possible!”

4. Stay consistent with your spiritual and self-care practices. These are critical pieces to staying centered and connected to the wellspring of wisdom within you. Your Higher Nature knows the quickest route to live your greatest life and guide you “home.” Take time to pause, integrate, and rest when you need to just BE!

5. Surround yourself with a strong, healthy, and like-hearted community of support including trusted friends, colleagues, and professionals. We all need help sometimes for accountability, an emotional boost, a kick in the pants, a mirror reflection, and for deeper healing processes we cannot do ourselves without getting in the way!

The next time you find yourself using excuses, struggling, empowering your fears, questioning your brilliance and competence, giving up, feeling frustrated, overwhelmed or stuck… Stop and breathe.

Think and feel into something you really, really want.

Take another breath.

Rest into the body and notice the sensations you are feeling.

Take another breath.

Ask yourself, “Am I willing for this (whatever you want) to manifest in my life?

Breathe deeply and stand in your willingness and openness to be taught, shown and guided to have what you really, really want. Make that verbal declaration to yourself and to the Universe. “Yes, I am willing and open to….” Be specific in what you are inviting into your life as a prayer.

Let go of the need to know how, what, or when your prayer will be answered. What you don’t know how to do, the Divine does and relishes the opportunity to teach you. Trust that you will be shown and intuitively guided through experiences that will serve you in the highest way.

And be open to the magic of possibilities!!

Namaste’
